<br><strong>Rooms & Camping - The Gunjur Project Lodge, Gambia</strong><br>The rooms & camping We offer you 6 en-suite guest rooms. Each room has its own private terrace/balcony. The lodge runs on solar power and the water is from our own source. During the day the sun will heat the water, but we can not guarantee that you have a hot shower. The rooms are surrounded by (palm) trees, bushes and flowers. We can arrange bunk beds in rooms to enable families to stay together. The rooms either have 2 single beds or 1 double bed (please let us know what you prefer) and can easily accommodate 2 people (with a bunk bed up to 4 people). Each room has a 240 volt power point, ideal for charging batteries etc during the day. The sockets are 3-pin (UK) so for visitors from mainland Europe we advise to bring an adapter. Mosquito nets are provided both for the beds and the windows. The bathrooms have a shower, wash basin and a toilet. We will try to make your stay as comfortable as possible by: daily cleaning of the rooms every morning a delicious continental breakfast room service mosquito net a free bottle of water in your room upon arrival laundry service, at a low cost Although there is no safe in the room it is possible to put your valuable documents and money in the safe at reception. We charge a fee of 25 GMD/day or 150 GMD/week.It is very useful to bring a torch, your own beach towels, mosquito repellent, good shoes/sandals for walking, suntan lotion, sun glasses and a hat to protect you from the sun. CampingIt is possible to bring your own tent and stay in our garden. You can use the outside shower and public toilet. We have small tents for 2 people to rent. <br>

Tegenover de kamers is een tuin met (palm-)bomen, struiken en bloemen. African Drumming There are many different drums in West Africa. Besides the popular Djembe we offer workshops in Djun-Djun-Da and Sabar. All the instruments we use are made by our teachers or by local craftsmen. Djembe (pronounced jem bay) has many other names like djimbe, yembe of jembe. It is as hand drum shaped like a goblet and covered with a leather (goat) skin. Another name for the Djembe is the magical drum. The origin of the drum is in West Africa and in Gambia you will hear the drums in every village. Djun-Djun-Da is the largest of the the Dundun family which has it origin in West Africa. This instrument has a warm sound and is used to add rhythm and melody to the djembe ensemble. The Sabar is a small drum that found its origin in neighbouring Senegal and is often refered to as the royal drums because of their unique sound. It looks like a djembe but is longer and not as wide. The construction is different from the djembe as pegs are used to fix the skin instead of only rope. Besides the popular Djembe we offer workshops in Djun-Djun-Da and Sabar. It is as hand drum shaped like a goblet and covered with a leather (goat) skin. Another name for the Djembe is the magical drum. The origin of the drum is in West Africa and in Gambia you will hear the drums in every village. </P> <P style="MARGIN: 0em" align=justify> </P> <P style="MARGIN: 0em" align=justify><SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline">Djun-Djun-Da</SPAN> is the largest of the the Dundun family which has it origin in West Africa. This instrument has a warm sound and is used to add rhythm and melody to the djembe ensemble.</P> <P style="MARGIN: 0em" align=justify> </P> <P style="MARGIN: 0em" align=justify>The <SPAN style="TEXT-DECORATION: underline">Sabar</SPAN> is a small drum that found its origin in neighbouring Senegal and is often refered to as the royal drums because of their unique sound. It looks like a djembe but is longer and not as wide. <br><strong>Group Travel Gambia - The Gunjur Project Lodge</strong><br>Groups / Youth Links The Gunjur Project can facilitate visits for youth groups and schools whilst working closely with the local community. We aim to promote an understanding of what it means to be a global citizen in the 21st century by providing an African adventure. The Gunjur Project can offer its young visitors exclusive use of facilities in a secure, risk assessed site. ‘The Gunjur Project provides everything expected and more. My group were quite overwhelmed, yet soaked in the experience. I recommend that any youth worker who wants to make a difference to young people’s lives should bring them here. Within all of the itineraries’ visitors will take part in projects that have embedded community interaction. Previous groups have engaged with and received warm welcomes from schools, youthgroups, sports teams and local host families. A group of young women arrived with a specific aim to see how their peers in Gambia lived; we arranged visits to compounds where the young Gambians explained how they lived day to day. They took the group to the local market to shop for the evening meal, that involved a lot of bartering, to which the visiting group were encouraged to have a go. Preparation for your stay at the Gunjur Project Both in preparing for your group and once you are in The Gambia we can assist you. Some members of The Gunjur Project team will be based in the UK between the months of July to October and within this time they can offer personal support to you and your group. We can develop a package to help your group prepare for their tailor made experience. We can offer discussion sessions and support you in developing a suitable programme of activities that meets you and your group’s aspirations, provide drumming workshops and educational discussions with yourself, your students and their parents/guardians. This is by prior arrangement and costs will be agreed accordingly. Before your stay at the Gunjur Project We work with group leaders to develop an itinerary tailor made for the needs of your group. For example visitors who wish to undertake environmental projects can be linked with environmental groups in Gambia and between them they can make a real difference. Sports orientated groups will be linked with students in Gambia who wish to improve their sports skills. The list is endless. By linking into specific parts of the community our visitors are sure of making a difference and we guarantee this Gambian adventure will leave all our visitors with a new perspective on life. During your stay at the Gunjur Project As youth workers we understand the importance of ensuring that the group spend some time evaluating their experience. We will work with group leaders to plan a daily evaluation – thereby ensuring that the group is recording and appraising their experience and ensuring that everyone is gaining the most from their time with us and there is always opportunity to develop the itinerary to accommodate anything the group deems important. Previous groups have used group discussions, games, quizzes and diaries (both video and paper). Environmental conservation and preservation is at the heart of the Gunjur Project’s ethos. Visiting groups will not only gain awareness and understanding of The Gambia’s environmental issues and concerns but they will also contribute to the future development and protection of this fragile environment. Working closely with a local grass roots community group GEPADG (Gunjur Environmental Protection and Development Group) has led to some very beneficial projects for all involved. Previous groups have been involved in tree planting exercises, field studies, workshops, and presentations. One of the on site Directors is a drum tutor who has worked in schools in the UK for many years and is on hand to provide drum workshops to any aspiring students. Voorgaande groepen konden keer op keer rekenen op een warm welkom van scholen, jeugdbewegingen, sport teams en gast gezinnen. Een voorbeeld is dat van een groep van jonge vrouwen die wilden kennis maken met de dagelijkse leefomstandigheden van hun leeftijdsgenoten. Wij regelden bezoeken aan de compounds (groep van huizen/hutten waarin een familie samenwoont) waar de jonge Gambianen uitlegden hoe hun leven eruit ziet. Men ging mee naar de markt om alle ingredienten te kopen voor het avondmaal waarbij de nodige onderhandelingen met de marktlieden aan te pas kwam en waar de bezoekers aan mee moesten doen. Er werd geleerd om een traditioneel Gambiaans gerecht te koken en op op die en op andere manieren leerde de groep over de verschillen in cultuur maar ook raakten ook bekend met de overeenkomsten. Een sport team linken we aan een lokaal sport team en studenten brengen we in contact met lokale studenten. Hierdoor kan jouw groep hun steentje bijdragen en zijn we ervan overtuigd dat dit avontuur impact zal hebben op hun leven. The area In and around the lodge you will find the typical flora & fauna of the Gambia. Different palm trees, boabab trees, cashew nut trees and many other trees which are home to a lot of birds. Gambia is a paradise for birds and in the area of the lodge you will find many different species from large vultures to tiny sun birds. Many of these birds can be seen whilst sitting in our own garden sometimes drinking and pruning their feathers at our bird bath. It is a ten minuite stroll to the beachside fishing area - where you will see brightly painted fishing boats (pirogues) coming and going with women waiting and ready to get the catch off the boats sometimes wading neck high with baskets on their heads then they immediatley start cleaning or selling the fish. It is just interesting to see how all this is done and especially when they bring a boat to rest on the shore. So many people are helping; it is a real joint effort. In the village you will find smoke-house where they preserve the fish so that it can be transported up country or exported to other countries. Either side of the fishing village you can walk for miles along beautiful unspoilt beaches where you will see the fish eagles diving for their lunch or pelicans riding the thermals. If you want to spend time on the beach there are one or two beach shacks where you can get a cold drink, including the Kaira Kunda Beach bar, or you can stop to have a swim in the warm Atlantic Ocean. The lodge is situated in an area where there is a Mandjako settlement, a local tribe who originated from Guinea Bissau and a lot of them have Portugese names. They are forest people who who can be seen climbing the trees (using only a piece of twine) to collect the palm nuts, cut the leaves or tap the trees to make local palm wine. Take a walk through the tiny village of Kajabang and meet the local people who will greet you with a smile. Holy rocksOn the beach, towards the south, are the holy rocks where an important Iman has been laid to rest. During the day you will see many locals, in colourful kaftans, proceed towards these rocks for prayer and meditation. Gunjur villageBy foot you will reach the centre of Gunjur in about 20 minutes, but with a bush taxi it takes you less then 5 minutes and it will cost you10 GMD (about 26p). The market is centrally located and here you will find the women selling their fresh fruit, vegetables and fish. Meat is mostly sold by men. Around the market there are all kind of shops that sell food, drinks and other useful items. There are also DIY-shops, tailors etc in the 'shopping street'. Taking a stroll through the village is a nice thing to do and the villagers will welcome you. You will also see several schools and the local soccer fields where matches are played during the weekend. Sometimes a wrestling match is organised. If you have to opportunity to visit one, do so. <br>

Verschillende palmbomen, boababs, cashewnootbomen en vele andere boomsoorten die een woonplaats bieden aan vogels. Gambia is een waar vogelparadijs met vele verschillende soorten, vaak heel kleurrijk soms een beetje lelijk. Zelfs als je gewoon in onze tuin zit, zie je al heel veel vogels. Op verschillende plaatsen kom je ook aapjes tegen.</SPAN></P> <P style="MARGIN: 0em"> </P> <P style="MARGIN: 0em"><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma"></SPAN><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma">Het landschap is ruw en open. Vlakbij ligt een Mandjako dorpje en het visserdorpje van Gunjur. Daar is altijd veel te doen. Vissers die met hun kleurrijke bootjes aan komen varen met hun vangst. Vrouwen en kinderen die hen op staan te wachten en meteen in actie schieten om de vis in ontvangst te nemen. Deze wordt dan direct schoongemaakt of verkocht. Soms wordt met inspanning van iedereen een boot op het strand getrokken, dat is een heel spektakel om te zien. In het dorpje liggen rokerijen zodat de vis langer bewaard kan worden. Tijdens het wandelen zie je hoe de zeemeeuwen en andere vogles duiken om hun lunch te bemachtigen, vaak zie pelikanen die prachtig aan het zweven zijn hoog in de lucht. Gedurende de dag zul je vele mensen, vaak in kleurrijke kaftans, over het strand naar deze plek zien lopen. Er wordt in alle rust gebeden en gemediteerd. </SPAN></P><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma"> <P><SPAN lang=EN-US style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY: Tahoma"><SPAN style="FONT-WEIGHT: bold; COLOR: #006400">Het dorp Gunjur</SPAN><BR>Het centrum van Gunjur ligt op een wandeling van ongeveer 40 minuten, met de bush-taxi ben je er in een paar minuutjes voor een bedrag van 10 GMD (ca. 30 cent). Centraal ligt de markt waar iedere dag met name vrouwen zitten met verse groenten, fruit en vis. Het vlees is meer een mannentaak. Rond de markt bevindt zich een aantal winkeltjes waar je terecht kunt voor levensmiddelen en andere dingen die handig kunnen zijn. Ook doe-het-zelf zaakjes, kleermakers, fietsenmakers e.d. hebben allemaal hun plekje in het centrum. Wandelen door het dorp is echt leuk om te doen en je zult vaak allerhartelijkst begroet worden door de inwoners. Natuurlijk zijn er ook een aantal scholen en een voetbalveld waar het er soms heftig aan toe kan gaan tijdens de wedstrijden. Af en toe worden erworstelwedstrijden georganiseerd. Als je de kans krijgt om die te bezoeken, zeker doen.</SPAN></P></SPAN> <br>

Tips There several things you have to think about before you go on holiday. To make it easy we made a list with the most important things to remember. The use of a credit card is very limited in Gambia.
