Ash cloud leaves Oxford students stranded in Gambia | 02-05-2010
Oxford Brookes University students and colleagues from Oxfordshire and Berkshire made the most of being stranded in the Gambia by working to improve education provision. The Gunjur Project (a lodge that provides educational residentail opportunities) has generously helped them with accommodation following the students’ intensive and fruitful week at the Gambia College Brikama, and has organised the students to help on community projects in Gunjur and the surrounding area. Students have been helping the community to build a new classroom for their nursery, doing everything from softening the mud to making the bricks. Here is a picture of some of the group after getting dirty making mud blocks. Nick Swarbrick (leader of group)

The roof and the toilet soak away was built using money donated by a group from Warrington in the UK The school has 2 teachers and over 60 children have enrolled. The teachers are local people who are enrolled at teacher training college, the money to pay for their training was raised by the 'De Boer family' from Sweden collected in their SuperICE shop. Visitors to Gunjur Project recently ran a fish mobile workshop with the children. Students from the Samuel Whitbread Community college stayed at the project in December 2009. Staff sponsorship scheme | 15-01-2009
Last year we emailed all of The Gunjur Project friends asking for support to help with the staff sponsorship scheme. We received a huge response and as a result all staff was enabled to either attend a course of their choice or nominate a member of their family to attend a course. The courses were held through the summer months and we were able to continue paying their salary whilst they attended their courses. Some staff had their children sponsored for a year's educations whilst others attended computer literacy and English proficiency courses. Three staff even achieved distinctions on their results. Many thanks to all the sponsors and well done to all the staff!!
We are now planning and preparing for the staff sponsorship scheme to continue in 2009/10. If you can support us in any way then please email for more details. As last year we will continue to pay staff their salary throughout the summer and give paid time away from work to attend courses.

An appeal was sent to the friends of Gunjur Project Lodge for financial support for a member of our staff team who is unable to read and write due lack of funds for schooling when younger. The response was fantastic and has enabled us to offer every member of our team the opportunity for studies or to nominate a member of their family to receive the sponsorship. Abdou Marnee is progressing well with his English proficiency course. He said ‘I am so happy I have the opportunity to learn to read and write, I thought I would have to go to school with small children but I am learning with other adults. Now I realise I do not need to feel shame for starting to learn now. I feel honoured to have been given this opportunity.’ Abdou is attending ‘’’’ Leah Sylva, Ablie Bojang, Sol Damphe & Sainey Cammarra have all enrolled in computer studies. Ablie said ‘I never thought I would be able to use a computer, now I understand the importance of the computer and how the internet can learn you so much about the rest of the world. Its fantastic’ The computer courses are being held via ‘Jollof Tutors’ in Brikama. It has been wonderful to see how each member of our team have personally developed through this opportunity. Pa Jang, Momadou & Kodu Njie have all nominated their children to receive the sponsorship. This will be paid at the beginning of next term.
